Volunteer Services
More than 300 people serve as volunteers at King’s Daughters, contributing more than 60,000 hours of service each year. Volunteers can be found throughout the medical center – answering phones and directing visitors at the front desks and in waiting areas, greeting customers and escorting them through the medical center, delivering flowers to patient rooms, assisting guests at the Hospitality House, visiting with patients on behalf of King’s Daughters Pastoral Care and helping customers at the Auxiliary Gift Shop. Volunteers typically serve one 4 hours shift a week, although many volunteer additional hours. Placement is coordinated based on the needs of the medical center and the interest and availability of the volunteer applicant.
The King’s Daughters Women’s Auxiliary was established in 1955, and in 1979, men joined the ranks. The Auxiliary raises thousands of dollars each year through the Gift Shop and fund-raising events, in support of various medical center programs. Some of the most notable programs that the Auxiliary supports include:
- Provide funding for a juvenile diabetic support group which incorporates education and activity for youth and their families
- Infant and toddler car seats for needy children/families
- Teddy bears for pediatric surgical patients
- Lifeline – Personal Emergency Response System which supports independent living
- Medication fund, which helps provide prescription medications to needy patients
- Rehabilitation van used for patient outings to prepare them for returning home
In addition to hospital-based programs, the Auxiliary purchased playground equipment for Central Park; is a major contributor to the building and ongoing funding for King's Daughters Hospitality House; committed a large contribution to the Mobile Mammography Unit; and in 2012 provided major funding to purchase the King's Daughters Auxiliary Mobile Health Unit.
KDMC volunteers are treated to special lunches, programs and celebrations, flu vaccines and free health screenings. They are awarded pins signifying their hours of service. A volunteer jacket and identification badge are presented to volunteers at the completion of their volunteer orientation.
