King’s Daughters Medical Center, in conjunction with the Kentucky Heart Foundation, is offering a free varicose vein screening beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the King's Daughters Offices, 1709 State Route 321, Prestonsburg.


Interventional Radiologist Wes Lewis, M.D., will perform the screening.

Ashland, Ky.— King’s Daughters Health System has been recognized as one of the nation’s Most Wired for Health Information Technology in the July issue of Hospital & Health Networks magazine. 

“This recognition reflects the effort and intensity that King’s Daughters Health System has put into information technology over the past few years,” said Cathy Cooper-Weidner, vice president, chief information officer. “This includes implementing Epic™, an electronic health record system, to continually improve quality outcomes for our patients.” 

The Epic system integrates electronic medical records wherever the patient receives treatment throughout King’s Daughters Health System. Epic is used daily by 104 King’s Daughters practitioners in over 60 offices across all specialties within the medical center and at regional locations including the offices of King’s Daughters Medical Specialties, The Kentucky Heart Institute as well as King’s Daughters family and urgent care centers throughout the region. 

“The progress that KDHS has made with respect to information technology and the electronic health record in such a short period of time is remarkable,” Cooper–Weidner said. “This progress occurred because of the talent and team effort made by all of our team members and physicians.”

Ashland, Ky.— Congratulations to Wendy Fletcher, DNP, APRN, FNP, for being the first King’s Daughters advanced practitioner to earn a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Wendy is a Family Nurse Practitioner at King’s Daughters — Health Plus in Morehead and earned her DNP degree from Texas Christian University.

Wendy said earning this degree allows her to translate existing research into practice and work in sync with providers to improve nursing practice and impact healthcare outcomes for patients. DNP graduates typically impact nursing through active engagement in the service/practice setting.

Her coursework focused on understanding and managing the complexity of the healthcare environment, using systematic tools such as statistics and decision models for determining the best evidence-based interventions, developing expertise in translational research, actively engaging in healthcare policy and politics and becoming informed regarding emerging sciences and technology.
