If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet this year, there’s
still time! The Community Relations team of King’s Daughters Medical Center
will give free flu shots to the first 200 adults who stop by Belk Women’s Store
in Ashland Town Center on Friday, Oct. 26.
Immunizations will be available starting at 10 a.m. on a
first-come, first-served basis.
Influenza is a contagious disease that can be spread by
coughing, sneezing or nasal secretions. For most people, symptoms last only a
few days, but for others the flu can be a serious, even fatal disease. Young
children, people over 65, pregnant women and those with heart, lung or kidney
disease can become very sick with the flu.
Each year, thousands of people die from influenza and even
more require hospitalization. By getting the flu vaccine, you can protect
yourself and those you care about from needless suffering.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend
getting the flu vaccine as soon as possible. Influenza occurs from October
through May, with most cases occurring in January and February. It takes about
two weeks for protection to develop following immunization.
