Ashland, Ky. – Flu vaccinations for the 2012-2013 flu season are now available at King’s Daughters Family Care, Urgent Care and Medical Specialties centers throughout the region.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine each year, as soon as the vaccinations are available. “It is especially important that individuals at high risk of developing serious complications be vaccinated,” said Lisa Fritz, KDMC infection control coordinator. “High risk individuals include those with asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease, as well as pregnant women and people 65 and older,” Fritz said.
According to the CDC, flu can start hitting as early as October and continue as late as May. “It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop and provide protection against the flu,” Fritz said, adding, “Annual vaccination is needed because the viruses are constantly changing. Each year’s vaccine is formulated to protect against the changes.”
