Ashland, Ky. - King’s Daughters Medical Specialties will present a free health fair from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, July 27. The event, “Controlling the Two Bs — Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure,” will take place at the KDMS - Endocrinology office at 2025 Carter Ave., Ashland, Ky. The event is jointly sponsored by King’s Daughters endocrinologists and nephrologists.
Free screenings will include blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and foot exams. King’s Daughters endocrinologists Hazel Yang, M.D., and Prasanna Santhanam, M.D., along with nephrologists Michael Kasey, D.O., and Charbel Salem, M.D., will be available to answer questions. In addition, participants will have access to a diabetes educator and a registered dietitian from King’s Daughters. Light refreshments will be provided.
“The upcoming health fair is an important event, especially for any person who is over the age of 40 and has a personal or family history of diabetes or kidney disease,” said Dr. Santhanam.
The dual focus of the screenings is important, said Dr. Yang, “Endocrinology and nephrology decided to partner in conducting the health fair, because diabetes and kidney disease are so closely related.”
Both are on the rise worldwide and in our community, said Dr. Salem. “These two chronic diseases can lead to changes in the vessels supplying blood to body organs. One major body organ that could be affected by diabetes and high blood pressure is the kidney. Kidney failure can lead to the ultimate need for dialysis and other conditions.“
No appointment is required for the screening. Fasting is required for participation in the cholesterol screening. For more information, call (606) 329-1894.
