ASHLAND, KY — The King’s Daughters Surgical Weight Loss program is pleased to welcome general surgeon Eric Smith, D.O., who will be performing bariatric surgery. Current Surgical Weight Loss program physicians include Timothy Wheeler, M.D., and Roderick Tompkins, M.D.
A native of Boyd County, Dr. Smith is extremely happy to be practicing medicine where he grew up. He joined the medical staff of King's Daughters in 2006, along with his wife, neurologist Melissa Smith, D.O.
Dr. Smith earned his medical degree in 2001 at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg, W.Va. He completed his internship (2002) and residency (2006) at Grandview Medical Center, Dayton, Ohio.
The Surgical Weight Loss program uses a comprehensive approach to weight loss. Since the program began at KDMC in 2003, more than a thousand patients have undergone one of two procedures: the Lap Band and the Roux-En-Y. Both are performed using using minimally invasive techniques, which means less pain and faster recovery for patients.
While surgical excellence is an important component of the program, preparation and support before and after the procedure also are vital to a patient’s success. Every potential patient is screened for existing health issues and receives extensive behavioral and nutritional counseling before and after the surgery.
