Join KDMC on Nov. 18 for Great American Smokeout Activities

Participate in the Great American Smokeout with King’s Daughters Medical Center 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Kroger, 370 Diedrich Blvd., Ashland. Appointments are not needed.

The American Cancer Society is recognizing the 35th Great American Smokeout by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.

The KDMC event will offer free health screenings, to include measurements of:

  • blood pressure
  • blood oxygen levels
  • lung function testing
  • heart rate
  • in addition, tobacco education and cessation handouts will be available

Some facts about smoking:

  • smoking kills more Americans than homicides, suicides, automobile accidents, fires, alcohol, drugs and AIDS combined
  • lung cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer deaths worldwide and 80 percent of all lung cancer cases are caused by smoking
  • smoking doubles the risk of  kidney and bladder cancers
  • smoking is the leading cause of stroke
  • secondhand smoke contains twice as much tar and nicotine as the smoke inhaled by a smoker and is proven to cause cancer
