Heart Failure Medications Q&A – Ask the pharmacist

Heart failure medications, actions and side effects will be the topic of the April meeting of the Heart Failure Support Group sponsored by King’s Daughters Medical Center.

The group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in the lower level conference room 4 at King’s Daughters Office Park, 835 Central Ave., Ashland. The guest speaker will be Allison Delong, a pharmacist with KDMC.

“Patients with heart failure may take multiple medications,” said Amanda Johnson, RN, who facilitates the group for KDMC’s Cardiology Clinic. “It’s important that patients understand what their medications do and how to recognize signs that might indicate changes in medications are required,” Johnson said.

Heart failure is a serious condition affecting more than 5 million Americans. While there is no known cure for the disease, the condition can be managed through medication, lifestyle change, education and support.

King’s Daughters Medical Center sponsors a monthly support group for those with heart failure and their families.

“Our goal is to help people who have been diagnosed with heart failure – and their families – reduce symptoms and hospitalizations and ultimately, to live better lives,” Johnson said.

The support group is free and open to anyone with heart failure and their loved ones. Physician referral is not required, although RSVPs are requested and may be made by calling (606) 408-6000 or (606) 408-6462. Each meeting includes both a formal presentation and an opportunity for members to share their experiences and help one another.

Additional meetings and scheduled topics for 2010 include:

  • May 25: Self-Care: Following your treatment plan & dealing with symptoms

  • July 20: Heart Failure: Keeping a Positive Outlook
