King’s Daughters provides free stroke screenings Dec. 8

King’s Daughters Medical Center will offer free stroke screenings Tuesday, Dec. 8, 4:30 to 8 p.m., at the KDMC Cardiology Clinic, located at 945 29th Street. The screenings will include total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, blood oxygen and the Bruits test (a trained medical professional uses a stethoscope to listen to the blood flow in the arteries in the neck to check for possible blockage). Vascular surgeon Al Addasi, M.D., will conduct the Bruits tests and discuss overall test results with participants. Fasting is not required but appointments are needed and can be made by calling 1-888-377-5362.

The stroke awareness team at King’s Daughters is dedicated to educating people about the signs and symptoms of stroke, which is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a significant cause of long-term disability. Many people still are not aware of the signs and symptoms of stroke, and wait too long to seek medical help. Those experiencing warning signs should call 9-1-1 immediately.

Stroke signs and symptoms include:

  • sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg
  • sudden change of vision in one or both eyes
  • trouble speaking or understanding
  • sudden dizziness or balance problems
  • sudden, severe headache
