KDMC Auxiliary donates $200,000 toward patient care and special services

The King’s Daughters Medical Center Auxiliary recently awarded $200,000 toward 17 specific projects that will benefit patients and local residents. The funds were raised throughout the year by gift shop sales, as well as special sales and events sponsored by members of the KDMC Auxiliary.

“The Auxiliary is the governing body of our more than 400 volunteers,” said Jane Blankenship, director of Volunteer Services. “In the past year our volunteers, including the teen volunteers who work in the summer, contributed more than 60,000 hours of service to the medical center, and have raised significant dollars that will benefit the Hospitality House, newborns, the elderly and families in need.”

Some of the projects that received funds from the Auxiliary include:

  • Lifeline – this program enables seniors who live alone to have access to help if they need assistance or experience a health problem.
  • Dental care for heart and vascular patients – funding to pay for dental care for uninsured and low-income patients who need open heart surgery. Patients cannot undergo needed surgery until they receive clearance from a dentist that they do not have oral infections that may complicate surgery.
  • Car safety seats and booster seats for qualifying families, as well as infant car seats for all babies born at King’s Daughters.
  • Adaptive equipment not covered by Medicare or Medicaid for qualifying Home Health and Home Medical Equipment patients.
  • Funds for food, clothing and shelter for eligible patients and their families.
  • Special support pillows for heart, lung and general surgery patients to help cushion their surgical sites as they recover.
  • Toy bears for pediatric surgery patients.
  • Infant formula, diapers, clothing and other supplies for eligible families with newborns.
  • Hospitality House supplies to ensure that guests are comfortable.
