This Saturday, otolaryngologist William Van Beneden, D.O., has a date — with a dunking booth! Dr. Van Beneden is taking a dive (maybe many) in support of Dollars for Devyn, a benefit to help build a handicapped-accessible bathroom for 15-year-old Devyn Pritchard who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The Lawrence County teenager has been battling the disease since he was very young.

Dr. Van Beneden is going to match the dunking booth money raised during his time in the tank!

The benefit will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flatwoods City Park. Dr. Van Beneden will be a dunking target for this worthy cause from noon to 12:40 p.m. The entire event will feature food, crafts, games, inflatables, raffles, a silent auction and live music.

Dr. Van Beneden’s own twin brother has Down’s Syndrome so Devyn’s story really touched him personally. “I found out about Devyn’s need from his mother, Becky Johnson, who works at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Same-Day Surgery Center,” said Dr. Van Beneden. “She’s such a nice lady, a hard-working single mom. Her coworkers organized the event, and I just want to get the word out and do what I can to help.”

On her web page, Devyn’s mom says, “We would like him to have a little freedom and independence, so he doesn't feel like he can't do anything on his own. If you could please help we would be very grateful … Come on out and support Devyn!”
