When heart patients need special treatment or procedures performed such as cardiac catheterization, they want to know where to go to get high-quality care. One way to select a qualified hospital is to check out any accreditations it has earned.

King’s Daughters Medical Center announced today it has received full accreditation of the medical center’s cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) program from the Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE). PCI, also known as coronary angioplasty, is a therapeutic procedure used to treat narrowed heart arteries performed by interventional cardiologists.

“ACE accreditation assures patients they are receiving cardiovascular care from King’s Daughters in accordance with the highest guidelines and standards set forth by the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions,” said Sandy Smith, Cardiovascular Service Line director. “Having the outside team of ACE representatives, physicians and nurses examine and evaluate every aspect of our catheterization and PCI processes is the best way to validate and improve the program.”

Smith said ACE accreditation is only awarded to hospitals with cardiac programs that have the organizational structure, internal processes, patient safety practices and clinical outcomes that meets or exceed the standards set by cardiac experts.

KDMC is the only hospital in Kentucky, Ohio or West Virginia to achieve this distinction and one of fewer than 20 facilities nationwide to have demonstrated clinical practices that satisfy the rigorous ACE requirements.

“We congratulate King’s Daughters Medical Center for seeking and obtaining an ACE percutaneous coronary intervention accreditation,” said ACE Chief Medical Officer Bonnie Weiner, M.D. “By submitting to a rigorous, independent evaluation, KDMC has shown an uncompromising commitment to provide safe, high-quality care.”

The ACE accreditation comes on the heels of numerous heart program awards and recognitions achieved in 2013 - 2014, including:
  • The Joint Commission Top Performer in Heart Attack care and treatment of Heart Failure. (2013).
  • Three-year accreditation as a Chest Pain Center with PCI from the Society for Cardiovascular Patient Care. (2004-2016)
  • Ranked No. 1 in Kentucky for medical excellence by CareChex in five areas of heart care: cardiac care, interventional coronary care, coronary bypass surgery and major cardiac surgery.
  • Named one of Healthgrades 100 Best Hospitals in America for Cardiac Surgery; ranked among the Top 10 percent in the Nation for Cardiac Surgery; and rated Five Stars for coronary bypass surgery.
  • KDMC’s cardiothoracic surgeons received the Society for Thoracic Surgery’s three-star rating for coronary artery bypass, the highest possible.
“We are thrilled to be awarded this accreditation confirming we have met the highest quality standards set forth in cardiovascular care,” Smith said.
