You know you’ve done a good job as an Imaging Center when a patient drives 7 ½ hours to return to you every year for a mammogram.
Or maybe at age 81, it’s stubbornness setting in? “I come back to KDMC because of the people here. They’re very nice; they work with me on getting a good appointment. I really like the valet parking too. Why would I ruin a good thing?” said Doris McCain. “My friends say ‘Doris, don’t drive that far…you need to rest more.’ I remind them that when I’m dead, I’ll be dead for a long time. I’ll rest then, not now.”
Actually, McCain hasn’t always driven so far to get to KDMC. She lived in Portsmouth, Ohio, for 70 years, teaching 34 of those years in Scioto County schools. After retirement and the death of her husband, she moved to Fairfax, Va., to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She has returned to KDMC once a year since 2001 for mammograms and bone density tests.
For those women who don’t take the time for a mammogram, she gives the following advice: “You put up with a little compression for the satisfaction of knowing you’re being responsible in the fight against breast cancer,” McCain said. “You know what the hardest part is? Holding my breath that long because my mouth is always running.”
After visiting friends in the area, McCain was anxious to head back to her new home, where she has settled in nicely as a greeter at the U.S. Capitol.
The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women beginning at age 40.
The King’s Daughters Breast Care Center recently completed its annual mammography accreditation review from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration, and was compliant in all areas.
KDMC’s Center for Advanced Imaging provides convenient outpatient imaging tests such as high-speed CT and MRI, and X-ray. The facility also houses the Breast Care Center, which provides digital mammography, dedicated ultrasound, breast MRI, and a stereotactic unit. For more information about mammography services at King’s Daughters, please call (606) 408-2742 or toll-free 1-877-304-1935.
Customer service is a key feature of the Center for Advanced Imaging. Plenty of parking is provided, and patients can be picked up and dropped off at the front door of the facility. In addition, when patients arrive for testing, the entire process, from registration to procedure, takes place in one location.
