New MRI Technology Takes Imaging Quality Further

ASHLAND, KY — King’s Daughters is renowned for bringing the newest, most advanced imaging technology to the region. Recently the medical center introduced two revolutionary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems—the MSK Extreme and the Achieva 3T—that are providing major benefits for patients.

MSK Extreme

ONI Extremity MRIThe ONI Medical Systems MSK Extreme combines superior imaging performance with patient convenience. The system provides a chair-based testing experience, where only the impacted limb, rather than the entire body, is enclosed by the MRI device.

Housed in the Center for Advanced Imaging, the MSK Extreme is designed specifically for scanning the hand, wrist, elbow, foot, ankle or knee. The high-speed MRI provides a quiet, comfortable, non-claustrophobic experience for patients, says radiologist Erik Fraley, M.D.

“With musculoskeletal injuries on the rise, it is imperative that we have detailed picture of each patient’s pathology in order to expedite diagnosis and treatment,” Fraley says. “The MSK Extreme provides extraordinary image detail we need in a system that is designed to optimize patient comfort.”

Achieva 3.0T

Achieva 3.0TKDMC also recently introduced the region’s most powerful MRI system, the Philips Medical Systems Achieva 3.0T. Housed in the medical center’s Radiology Department, the Achieva features the strongest available for routine use in a hospital setting—that produces faster and higher resolution scans.

“The Achieva system represents the latest technology that provides exceptional image quality in the most patient-friendly environment, says radiologist Ash Motimaya, M.D. “It is of tremendous diagnostic benefit to the community.”

Because of the level of detail it provides, Dr. Motimaya says the Achieva MRI assists physicians in the earlier diagnosis of a variety of medical conditions, particularly neurologic diseases.

“The Achieva MRI is exceptionally useful in helping our physicians to diagnose degenerative neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis,” he says.

The Evolution of MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is one of the most valuable non-invasive techniques in diagnostic medicine. Using powerful magnets and radio waves, MRI produces detailed images of the body’s organs and structures.

MRI technology is constantly evolving, creating faster systems with more powerful scanning capabilities. Images offer more detail than ever, enabling physicians to diagnose injuries and illnesses with pinpoint accuracy. Patient comfort is improving, too, as exams times have been cut in half. In addition, most machines now feature larger openings—welcome news for those who aren’t keen on spending time in a narrow tube.
