The King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) Blood Bank has been granted accreditation by AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks), an international non-profit membership organization dedicated to advancing the field of transfusion medicine and related biological therapies.
AABB sets standards, accredits facilities, publishes books and publications and produces educational programs to improve patient and donor safety. Accreditation follows an intensive on-site assessment by specially trained AABB assessors and establishes that the level of medical, technical and administrative performance within the facility meets or exceeds the standards set by AABB, according to Dr. Katalin Kovacs, M.D., medical director of the KDMC Blood Bank.
The AABB’s accreditation procedures are voluntary and participation promotes a level of professional and medical expertise that contributes to quality performance, she said. “Accreditation gives confidence to our patients and physicians that our blood bank is of the highest quality and support to achieve excellent patient care,” Dr. Kovacs says.
KDMC joins approximately 1,800 similar facilities across the United States and abroad that have earned AABB accreditation.
