KDMC Rehabilitation Department Offers "Wii"-habilitation

Wii-habilitation Ashland, Ky. — Rumor has it that patients are bowling and golfing in the King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) Rehabilitation Department.

“Sometimes one of the toughest struggles with rehab patients can be finding their will, their desire to participate in activities,” said Mike Thompson, Rehab Department director. His team members suggested the Nintendo Wii game system because in addition to a dose of fun, its games provide standing and weight-balancing activities and visual timing challenges.

A distinguishing feature of the Wii console is its wireless controller, which can be used to simulate releasing a bowling bowl, swinging a golf club or tennis racket, and much more.

Rehab instructors say the Wii game system is multifaceted when it comes to therapeutic value for their patients. “We can work with all types of patients – orthopedic, neurological, or it simply can be entertainment for our wheelchair-bound patients,” Thompson says. “By working the remote, patients are forced to use their hands, improve visual acuity, practice weight-shifting and standing balance. For some, it simply gives them a reason to get up from the wheelchair,” he said.

The KDMC full-service Rehabilitation Center is accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, meaning it meets the highest standards of patient care and safety. The center provides a wide-range of care, including: an Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, Transitional Care Unit, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology, Speech Therapy, Pediatric Outpatient Therapy, Balance Training, Spine and Pain Center, Wound Center, Home Health, Home Medical Equipment, and Neurodiagnostics.

The Rehabilitation Center also sponsors a support group for those who have suffered a stroke or other brain injury. Family members are encouraged to participate. To learn more about KDMC’s support groups, call 1.888.377.KDMC or visit our Community Events Calendar.
