Volunteer Services
More than 300 people serve as King’s Daughters Volunteers, contributing more than 60,000 hours of service each year. Volunteers can be found throughout the medical center – answering phones and directing visitors at the front desks and in waiting areas, greeting customers and escorting them through the medical center, delivering flowers to patient rooms, cuddling newborns in the nursery, and helping customers at the Auxiliary Gift Shop, among other things.
The King’s Daughters Women’s Auxiliary was established in 1955, and in 1979, men joined the ranks. The Auxiliary raises thousands of dollars each year through the Gift Shop and fund-raising events, to gives back to support various medical center programs. Some of the most notable programs that the Auxilary supports include:
- infant car seats/carriers that are provided to each baby born at KDMC
- teddy bears that are given to pediatric surgical patients
- medication fund, which helps provide prescription medication to patients who cannot afford it
- Rehabilitation van used for patient outings to prepare them for returning home
- the Auxiliary purchased playground equipment for Central Park
- The Auxiliary has made significant contributions to the King’s Daughters Health Foundation toward building a Hospitality House for families to stay in when a loved one is hospitalized.
KDMC volunteers are treated to special lunches and programs, outings and free health screenings. They are awarded pins signifying their hours of service.
Lifeline Program
The Volunteer Services Department also oversees the Ashland Lifeline program. The KDMC Auxiliary offsets the cost so elderly or disabled people living alone pay just a minimal monthly fee to subscribe to this emergency call system. When a subscriber pushes the call button, a signal is immediately sent to a call center, where they notify a designated friend or family member. If the contact person does not respond, the call center dials the local 911 system. This ensures that subscribers have a safety net if they have a problem and need immediate assistance.
