Breast Care: We Take Breast Cancer Seriously

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 12 percent of women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetimes.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

Death rates have been declining since about 1990, which the American Cancer Society attributes to earlier detection through screening, increased awareness and improved treatment.

KDMC is committed to providing women with the knowledge, tools and expertise necessary to raise awareness and prevention, early detection and successful treatment of breast cancer.

    Awareness and Prevention

King’s Daughters provides educational programs designed to help women be aware of breast cancer and the things they can do to reduce their risk and/or detect breast cancer early.

    Early Detection

Not only do we encourage breast self-exam, but we now perform screening mammograms without a physician order. This allows women to receive this potentially life-saving test when it’s convenient for them, without the added step of a visit to the doctor’s office.

    Successful Treatment

We offer a complete range of services to help women defeat breast cancer, including highly skilled radiologists, surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists. We offer cutting-edge treatments through our affiliation with the University of Kentucky Medical Center and the Kentucky Clinical Trials Network as well as the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast & Bowel Project, the Southwest Oncology Group, the National Cancer Institute’s Clinical Trials Support Unit.

Our program has achieved certification from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and is recognized by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

    A Place Just for Women

King’s Daughters Breast Care Center is conveniently located on the second floor of the Center for Advanced Imaging, 2225 Central Ave., Ashland.

The center provides fully digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and a digital Mammotome stereotactic unit for minimally invasive breast biopsies.

In addition, lab, counseling by a certified breast health specialist, a DEXA bone density scanner and a variety of support programs are available at the center.

KDMC’s Mobile Mammography Unit travels throughout eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio, providing access to digital mammography at our Family Care Centers, physician offices, work places and other locations. To find out where King’s Daughters Mobile Mammography Unit will be next, click here.

All testing is performed by specially trained and certified mammography technologists.

King’s Daughters radiologists use the R2 ImageChecker®, a special computer program that acts like a “spellchecker” for medical images to help flag suspicious areas on a mammogram.

Through a partnership with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, we are able to provide free or reduced cost mammograms to eligible women residing in Ohio and Kentucky. For more information about this program, please call our Community Relations department at (606) 408-9295.

If you're a woman over the age of 40, schedule your annual mammogram today by calling (606) 408-2742 or toll-free 1-877-304-1935.
