Urology is the specialty that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics and gynecology is required because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered.
Urologists perform laparoscopic surgeries of the prostate, bladder and ureter; remove stones, blockages, or cancerous growths; and repair abnormalities. Another common procedure performed by urologists is a vasectomy, or male sterilization.
