KDMC Nurse Residency
The Nurse Residency program is designed to help you build your confidence and competence as a new nurse as you transition from the role of student to a professional R.N.
The Nurse Residency Program features:
- 6 weeks of precepted clinical time on an assigned medical or surgical nursing unit
- Classroom time designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to be a competent KDMC nurse
- Nurturing support needed to smooth your transition into practice
- Bridging any gaps you may have in clinical skill proficiency
- Opportunities to develop a camaraderie with other members of the residency class, providing priceless peer support during this challenging time
The Nurse Residency Program’s clinical hours provide you with:
- The preceptor supervised 120 clinical internship hours required by the Kentucky Board of Nursing
- Assignment of a Clinical Educator to navigate you through your clinical experience
- Opportunity to experience a typical nursing work schedule and assignment
- Opportunity to enhance clinical skills
Classroom Hours
During the six week Nurse Residency program you will be scheduled classroom study time each week. Clinical Nurse Educators, as well as other hospital experts, provide the classroom portion of the Nurse Residency.
You will have the opportunity to learn:
- Medication Safety
- Code prep/mock code scenarios
- Hands-on skills lab
- Basic rhythm recognition
- Patient safety
- KDMC policies & procedures
- KDMC CARING & SPIRIT standards
About our Nurse Navigators
During your first week as a Nurse Resident you will be assigned a Clinical Nurse Educator who will serve as your personal navigator during your residency experience.
The Nurse Navigator will:
- Match you with a competent preceptor
- Prepare your clinical schedule
- Help you fulfill the KBN clinical requirements
- Guide you through your unit of hire interview process
